In proving mode, during prover activity.
Pressing the abort button interrupts several (not all) prover activities, in particular the application of a decision procedure attempting to close a state or producing a counterexample.
Not in all situations in which the button is enabled, pressing the button has an effect. There is no textual command that has the same effect as the abort button.
