Preparatory Work

Our design of the CONCERT architecture for distributed education has been shaped by the results of many former activities of our own and of other researchers at RISC-Linz (the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation in Hagenberg/Linz, Austria):

• We have developed various systems and languages for coordinating concurrent activities on parallel/distributed systems with focus on applications in symbolic computation.
• We have gained substantial expertise in the use and further development of interactive mathematical software systems in university and college education.

Both aspects are documented in the following subsections.
