abstract = {In this short note, I explain the importance of classical languages (Latin, Greek) for high schools and the benefit I derived throughout my scientific life as a professor of mathematics from the education in classical languages I obtained at my high school, the Akademisches Gymnasium in Innsbruck, Austria, in the years 1952-1960. I conclude with a list of suggestions how the high school education in "historic languages" can and should be expanded in to a comprehensive teaching of "future languages" based on an etymological view of the historic languages that includes Slavic languages and Sanskrit.},
