AbstractWe give a short introduction to the theory of Groebner bases introduced
and developed by the author since 1965.

We start from a list of problems in systems theory for which the method
of Groebner bases has recently been applied. The style of the presentation is informal, we concentrate on conveying the intuition behind the basic notions and results of the theory. Finally, we make a few remarks about the history of Groebner bases and give suggestions about how to get access to references and software on the Groebner bases method.
